Until you take a real look inside Napoleon Sports & Casino. \u201cSome people think we\u2019re gaming in dark basements,\u201d laughs Sara De Coster, Head of HR Belgium. \u201cBut we\u2019re more like a tech company \u00e0 la Coolblue than the clich\u00e9 people expect.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Values That Truly Live<\/h3>\n

At Napoleon Sports & Casino, you won\u2019t find corporate values printed on posters. Here, they truly come to life \u2014 literally. The hallways and desks are filled with dice, large and small, each printed with one of the five core values: Champion our Customer, Lift Each Other Up, Take Ownership, Impact the Game, and Do What\u2019s Right.<\/em> \u201cWe noticed that no one really remembered the English values, so we started linking them to symbols and actions,\u201d says Sara. During town halls, colleagues who embody the values are celebrated. \u201cOur leadership team even writes personal thank-you notes \u2014 and that really makes a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the fourth floor of headquarters, you might think you\u2019ve stepped into a sports club. \u201cWe completely rebranded that floor with a sports theme. Think: punching bag, dart boards, ping pong tables \u2014 we even have Remco Evenepoel\u2019s bike mounted on the wall,\u201d Sara proudly shares. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how many colleagues love being there. Some even arrive early just to secure a spot.\u201d The love for sport isn\u2019t just in the d\u00e9cor \u2014 it\u2019s also in the mindset. \u201cThere\u2019s healthy competition and strong friendships among colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flex vs. Fixed<\/h3>\n

Sara is clear: \u201cWe\u2019re an output-driven company. Want to go to the hairdresser in the morning? Go ahead \u2014 as long as your deadlines are met.\u201d That freedom is deeply rooted in the company culture, especially at headquarters. \u201cWe ask people to come in two to three days a week; the rest is hybrid. And yes, if your child needs to be picked up at 3 PM, feel free to catch up in the evening. Nobody bats an eye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another standout: their unlimited leave program (OPAL). Say what? \u201cI had my doubts at first too. But it works surprisingly well. It\u2019s especially reassuring for ex-freelancers or young starters who don\u2019t have many vacation days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Employees can take additional leave on top of the 20 statutory days and 10 extra days everyone receives \u2014 with clear expectations. Those who take up to three extra weeks can arrange that directly with their manager. For more than three weeks, there\u2019s a conversation with HR. \u201cNot to push back,\u201d says Sara, \u201cbut to ensure business continuity.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, the OPAL program isn\u2019t \u2018free holidays for all,\u2019 but rather a mature and flexible system based on trust and accountability. And it works: around 15% of employees use it, usually for an extra week or a few days \u2014 rarely for long absences.<\/p>\n
